National Small Business Week 2022: How to get involved

Every year for 50 years, the United States Small Business Administration (SBA) has celebrated National Small Business Week (NSBW). The goal is to focus on the contributions that American entrepreneurs and small business owners make to our economy, our culture, and the broader business community. Events across the country will mark the week, including awards ceremonies and virtual events. Read on to learn more about NSBW and how you can get involved.

When is National Small Business Week?

This year, NSBW is May 1-7, 2022. The theme is “Building a better America through entrepreneurship”. The events will highlight how American entrepreneurs are rebuilding the US economy after the COVID-19 pandemic, and the importance of small businesses to be the foundation of a healthy economy.

During the week, the SBA and sponsoring partner GOAL will highlight the tools and information that entrepreneurs and small business owners need to continue to rebuild America’s economy by strengthening supply chains and providing the products and services that Americans need.

Small businesses will find several aspects of NSBW useful, including:

  • Access to federal resources
  • Educational workshops
  • Networking

How can small businesses get involved?

If you’re a small business owner or a small business lover, there are several ways you can participate in National Small Business Week to show your support.

First, you can attend the virtual Small Business Week events (more info below). You can also attend local in-person events and pop-up events – check with your Local SBA for more information.

A great way to get involved with NSBW is to share your story via social media or email. You can find social media resources at Small Business Trends, including Instagram images to promote NSBW and your business. To embed your Twitter, Instagram or Facebook posts into a larger conversation, use the following hashtags:

  • #Small Business Week
  • #NSBW
  • #National Small Business Week

NSBW is a great time to thank your supporters as an entrepreneur or small business owner. If you have the time, you can organize an event at your company or write thank you cards to your best supporters. It’s also easy to create a thank you video to post on your social media accounts or send to your contacts via email.

You can also support a local small business of your choice, whether or not that business is yours. Encourage your friends and family to pay special attention to small businesses during NSBW and brag about your favorites in social media or online reviews.

Small Business Week Virtual Events

A number of Small Business Week events will take place, with a particular focus on virtual events due to the ongoing pandemic. The SBA will host a four-day series of events May 2-5, including a virtual National Small Business Week Summit, educational sessions and awards shows. You can attend a webinar to learn more about growing your small business, network with other small business owners, and find resources for your business. Other events will be announced as they develop.

SBA National Small Business Week Awards

Each year during NSBW, the SBA awards the best small businesses in the United States with the National Small Business Week Awards. The awards recognize the achievements of small businesses in their communities and the US economy. Winners are recognized in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the US Virgin Islands and Guam, with one winner from each of these areas selected for Small Business Person of the Year. Each of these winners will compete for the National Small Business of the Year Award, which is the SBA’s highest honor.

Other categories include:

  • Small Business Exporter of the Year
